The MINI Museum is back with a new website and a call for proposals

Remember the MINI Museum? The museum in a box with a digital frame as display and a USB pen drive as storage launched in 2010,

when the museum Director, Domenico Quaranta, on behalf of the Link Art Center handed it over to London based artist Paul B. Davis; and since then it traveled from node to node around a network of artists, collecting and displaying 13 artworks. Participating artists included Thomson & Craighead, Martin John Callanan, Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson, Marijke Appelman among others, and exhibition locations went from London to Berlin, from Nijmegen, the Netherlands to Bolkesjø, Norway, and from Hong Kong to Lianzhou, China. It is still around, traveling sometimes fast, more often slowly, disappearing for months and resurrecting unexpectedly, as happened recently in Mainland China. A behavior inherent in the idea of the traveling physical object, but that doesn’t match with the expectations of an increasing number of artists interested in dealing with it.

To respond to these expectations, we launch a new website, inviting artist from all over the world to donate works to the MINI Museum collection. When the donation is accepted, the work is displayed on the website, and the artist is allowed to add the information to his/her biography, the artwork captions and so on. The Link Art Center will be responsible for preserving and exhibiting the work in future screenings of the MINI Museum collection. The physical version of the museum will keep traveling, but waiting for his return we will prepare for it a virtual collection.

The MINI Museum of XXI Century Arts (MMAXXI) is grounded on the simple assumption that a screen display with a digital memory may be enough to archive, store and display some of the most relevant art of the XXI century. Artists can apply with any kind of artwork that can be shown on a screen: static and animated images, videos, sounds, texts in whatever form, software etc. Whether it is a unique or a poor version of the “original”, we will take care of it with the same love and devotion.
